| Kollodis BioSciences, Inc. Provides Cost Effective Mussel Adhesive Protein |
| |
(Seoul, Korea) October 12, 2009- Kollodis BioSciences, Inc. has announced the commercial availability of a proprietary recombinant mussel adhesive protein. Kollodis' mussel adhesive protein provides environmentally friendly, biocompatible adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces at economical prices.
Mussel adhesive protein (MAP) has many practical advantages including strong adhesion in wet environments and excellent biocompatibility. Existing commercially available mussel adhesive protein is very costly (about $75,000 per gram)- and has hampered its wide applicability and use.
Dr. Hyung Joon Cha, Professor of Chemical Engineering at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) and inventor of the Kollodis technology, states “We need 10,000 mussels using the current protein extraction method to obtain a gram of adhesive. This method is not feasible nor affordable for the demand on adhesives for wide applications.”
Recombinant DNA technology has been used previously and scaled-up production of MAPs has been attempted in several expression systems. However, attempts to produce a functional MAP have failed for several reasons. Kollodis has overcome the limitations of existing expression systems using its proprietary MAPTrix™ technology.
Kollodis BioSciences has an established manufacturing facility with an existing capacity of 500 grams per month. Kollodis provides research communities and the biotech industry with a wide variety of biofunctional mussel adhesive proteins at economical prices.
About Kollodis BioSciences, Inc.
Kollodis BioSciences, Inc. has successfully developed a proprietary recombinant protein expression system for the large scale production of various mussel adhesive proteins (MAP). Kollodis is developing MAP-based smart biomaterials for biotech, medical and industrial applications. The Company's proprietary and patented MAPTrix™ platform technology recombinantly incorporates bioactive peptides into a mussel adhesive protein (MAP) for cell culture and related applications.
